Vietnam Travel Guide in 2022: Restrictions, Quarantine and Visa

Vietnam entry requirements and quarantine rules during COVID-19: from January 1, 2022, the quarantine duration is now shorter, only 3 days for fully vaccinated entrants.

According to the latest update on entry requirements and quarantine in Vietnam in the Official Dispatch No. 10688/BYT-MT, the quarantine duration is now shorter than before, only 3 days at the residence or place of accommodation. For those whose stay is under 14 days, there is no quarantine at all.

Latest quarantine policies and procedures for entrants to Vietnam 

Who can enter Vietnam now?

  • Entrants who travel to Vietnam for diplomatic purposes
  • Investors, experts, skilled workers, business managers, and their family members (parents, spouses, and children)
  • Foreigners who study in Vietnam
  • Foreigners invited and guaranteed by agencies, organizations and individuals in accordance with the Law on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam
  • Tourists (on March 2022, Vietnam re-opened borders for all travelers)

General Vietnam entry requirements

  • Entrants must be tested negative within 72 hours prior to entry.
  • Because of the Omicron variant, entrants are required to take a quick test at the airport in Vietnam.
  • Before entry, all entrants (except entrants coming to Vietnam for diplomatic purposes) are required to install the PC-Covid application to create a Personal QR code and use it during their stay in Vietnam or they can access here to get one in case they are unable get the generated Personal QR code from PC-Covid Application.
  • Vietnamese citizens, their spouses, and children can receive free vaccination during their quarantine period if they have not been fully vaccinated yet (provided that full requirements are met). 
  • The cost of testing, quarantine, treatment and other relevant costs (if there is any) shall be covered in accordance with Resolution 16/NQ-CP.

*If the entrants are foreigners and they do not have a Vietnamese phone number yet, they can use the number of the organization or individual that invites them to Vietnam to install and use the PC-Covid app.

Specific quarantine requirements for entrants to Vietnam 

For fully vaccinated entrants or entrants that have recovered from COVID-19

  • Self-quarantine for 3 days since entry at the places of residence or accommodation.
  • Take an RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 on the 3rd day after entry. If the result is:
    • Negative: continue health monitoring until the 14th day.  
    • Positive: further actions shall be taken according to government regulations.  

For not fully vaccinated entrants

  • Self-quarantine for 7 days after entry at the places of residence or accommodation.
  • Take an RT-PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 on the 3rd and 7th day after entry. If the result is:
    • Negative: continue health monitoring until the 14th day. 
    • Positive: further actions shall be taken according to government regulations. 

However, people who are under 18 years old or over 65 years old, pregnant women, or people who have underlying health issues can quarantine with their caregivers, who must sign a commitment paper stating their voluntary willingness.

For entrants whose stay in Vietnam is under 14 days 

According to the latest announcement from the Ministry of Health on December 24, entrants to Vietnam for a short-term working period that is less than 14 days do not need to quarantine. However, there are some guidelines that they need to follow: 

  • They have to fully comply with 5K Regulations
  • A list of all people who come into contact with them must be made. 
  • They must have international health insurance or the companies or organizations that invite them must commit to cover the cost if they get infected with COVID-19.
  • If they wish to work at different localities, there must be a clear plan regarding transportation and movement that gets approved by those localities. 
  • After the short period of work, if they want to extend their stay, they have to comply with current regulations in terms of entry/exit and COVID-19 prevention and control as below: 

Guidelines for Not fully vaccinated entrants: 

  • If the work finishes in less than 7 days after entry, they must self-isolate at the accommodation until the end of the 7th day and take a RT-PCR test on the 3rd and 7th days. If the result is negative, continue health-monitoring until the end of the 14th day.
  • If the work takes more than 7 days to finish, they must take a RT-PCR test on the 7th day. If the result is negative, continue health-monitoring until the end of the 14th day. 
  • In both cases, if there are symptoms such as fever, coughing, sore throat, breathing problems, etc., they must inform the authorities immediately. 

Guidelines for Fully vaccinated entrants: 

  • If the work finishes in less than 3 days after entry, they must monitor their health at the accommodation until the end of the 3rd day and take a RT-PCR test. If the result is negative, continue health-monitoring until the end of the 14th day. 
  • If the work takes more than 3 days to finish, they must take a RT-PCR test on the 3rd day. If the result is negative, continue health-monitoring until the end of the 14th day. 
  • In both cases, if there are any COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, coughing, sore throat, breathing problems, etc., they must inform the authorities immediately. 

When do these new quarantine rules take effect in Vietnam?

From January 1, 2022, the COVID-19 prevention and control measures outlined in this Official Dispatch shall come into effect. 

Visa to Vietnam in 2022 

According to Directive 450 (issued on January 18 2022)

  • Foreigners and overseas Vietnamese and their relatives with valid entry documents (permanent residence card, temporary residence card, visa, valid certificate of visa exemption) are allowed to enter Vietnam without additional entry approval process.
  • For foreigners without visas: their applications for visa will still be considered in favorable conditions if they want to enter Vietnam for work, education, seminars, humanitarian activities, etc….

HUGE UPDATES FROM THE GOVERNMENT ON MARCH 15 2022:
Citizens from 13 foreign countries (the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Republic, Italian Republic, Kingdom of Spain, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Russian Federation, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kingdom of Denmark, Kingdom of Sweden, Kingdom of Norway, Republic of Finland, and the Republic of Belarus) can get Visa exemption if their stay lasts for 15 days since the day they enter Vietnam, regardless of what types of Visa they possess and their reason for entry.

This Visa-waiving policy will be executed for 3 years, counting from the day it was issued, and will be considered to continue.
